The hack starts with a VoIP telephone number. Mitnick uses Flowroute as his provider, but he told me afterwards that the same thing can also be accomplished with a few other VoIP providers. On the hardware side, all you need is a computer to use Asterisk with VoIP calls to interface with the public telephone network requires additional hardware. In other words, it's not an expensive thing to set up. Asterisk has its own scripting language. Once a phone call hits Mitnick's Asterisk server, a script that he demonstrated analyzes information in the SIP header.

The script can see the originating phone number and can also tell that the caller wanted their number hidden. But, just because you ask for something doesn't mean you'll always get it. Sort of annoying that there is no way to call them back and let them know about it. I have missed answering it while it was ringing every time so far. Anonymous Mar 20, , Most likely it is a telemarketer. Everytime I've answered "restricted" calls it has been something like that. Most likely it is a telemarketer, OR someone who has caller-id blocked. Landline carriers and, I imagine, most cellular carriers allow you to block caller ID by default. Cell carriers even let you do it at no additional charge.
Hacking Caller ID: unblocking blocked phone numbers
Anonymous Mar 22, , 7: As others posted, most likely a telemarketer. By default I don't answer any of these Anonymous Mar 23, , 6: On Sun, 20 Mar Not saying there aren't some out there who don't do this, but haven't telemarketers been required to send CID info with their calls? Anonymous Mar 27, , 4: On Mon, 21 Mar Last Saturday, I got a call from Restricted, but since it was a weekend and airtime was free, I answered it.
It turned out to be some company's I can't remember who right now customer service telling me something worthwhile, so I was glad I answered it.
I also have a friend who has a device installed in his house that automatically dials the CID block code every time he picks up a phone. Anonymous Apr 7, , 9: Most calls from a company using T1 lines do not send Caller ID. On Thu, 7 Apr I disagree with "most". IME, "most" send a single number, usually the main switchboard number. Anonymous Nov 21, , 3: I disagree I had the same caller ristricted call 4x at 2 am at 3am at 8am and 7pm within a 24 hr period???? I get them all of the time, but I happen to know it is my mother, that's right my mother. I started getting restricted calls a few years ago and there was never anyone on the line when I answered.
I assumed it was some disgruntled ex or something, but they've lasted for literally 4 years.
What happened?
The number of calls have decreased, but I still get them at very odd hours of the day mostly night. Verizon said I could change my number or file a police report and retain a lawyer. Neither were worth it to me. I just ignore the calls now, but I still think there's something weird going on with Verizon accounts.

You may find the full phone number listed. You may also put a block on your phone that lets callers know that you are not accepting calls from blocked or restricted numbers. By doing this, you force the individual calling you to unblock his or her phone number and try to call you again. While this may be a small headache for someone who truly wants to reach you, it can be an effective way of weeding out those unwanted spam callers or pestering telemarketers.
If you answer a restricted call, you can ask the person who is calling for his or her phone number. While this does not always happen, you stand of chance of catching the caller off-guard in a moment of weakness, and he or she may give you the information for which you are searching.
